Generally, I think I like narratives that connect to a bigger picture more. It's easy to get caught up in the action/plot of a book but beyond the raw emotion of a particular scene, you're not necessarily left with something broader to take home. I appreciate it when a writer does the work of extrapolating for me. I guess that makes me a lazy reader. If you want to round out your tour of war narrative, you should check out "Jarhead."
